Paint Basics 101 – Paint And Its Basic Composition

Paint is a dispersion of very finely ground pigment in a liquid composed of a binder and vehicle. They are used to protect and add beauty to the surfaces they are applied on. Additives are also added to improve performance of the paint or ease the manufacturing process.

Painting is a surface coating activity used to prolong the life of the surfaces they are applied on. Other surface coating technologies include, but not limited to, anodising and electroplating.

Paint is generally classified into two categories such as architectural paint and industrial finishes. Architectural paint is paint used for wood, gypsum wallboard or other plaster surfaces. Industrial finishes are applied to wider variety of substances such as plastics, metals, rubber, paper, textiles as well as wood. Most architectural paints are air dried while industrial finishes can be baked in an oven or also air-dried.

Pigment is what gives color to the paint. Paint is blue or red or brown or black or white because of the pigments used in the paint formulation. In its unprocessed form, they are usually added as powders to the formulation and passes through mills with a small portion of the liquid components. It is common to mix up different pigments in one paint color. For example, if you want a sky blue color, normally white and blue pigments are used to achieve the effect.

Binders is what holds the paint components together, on its own it would be translucent to colorless, once dried it would form the film of the dried paint. The binder or resin is what makes the paint stick to the surfaces they are applied on. It’s what makes paint glossy.

Vehicles are a component of the paint that form or to help form the paint film. These usually contain oils and synthetic resin and compose only of a small amount of the paint. Vehicles normally have volatile and film-forming components. That is why it aids in the film formation and eventually part of the vehicle become part of the dried paint film.

Additives are used in paints in many ways, some aid in the production of the paint while some help in improve the performance of th

e paint. Some additives make the pigment be ground faster in the mill, while some help make the dried paint film reduce its gloss or glare. Other additives help in making the paint last a longer time on the painted surface.

In painting your house, commercial or industrial property, always use the highest quality of paint. But if planning to hire painting contractors, make sure to engage in someone with years of experience and with a good reputation.
